Gordon Ramsay has been diagnosed with arthritis while recovering from knee surgery.

The 55-year-old marathon-running and cycling-enthusiast chef has been advised to 'slow down' by doctors, and admits it has been a wake-up call.

Ramsay told The Sun: “F*** me. I’ve just come off two weeks on crutches, as I had meniscus surgery. I did it running up the hill in Richmond Park, bolting up it. It was f***ing painful. And when I got the X-rays back, the doctor said, ‘You’ve got arthritis in your knee’.

“I’d never heard that word in relation to me before. He told me I needed to start slowing down. It was a case of ‘Imagine you’ve got 1.5million steps to run over the next 30 years . . . pace yourself’.

“He showed me pictures, and you just don’t want to hear you’ve got arthritis in your knee."

The TV chef - who is hosting new BBC gameshow Gordon Ramsay’s Bank Balance - admitted he is a "workaholic" and working-out is his way to release stress.

But after losing his own father to a heart attack in his early fifties the Hell's Kitchen star and father-of-four is wary of pushing himself too hard.

He said: “I also have that stern warning of my father dying at 53 and I look at my kids and know I can’t leave them rudderless.

“I am slightly scared of stopping but do know I will have to slow down at some stage.”

Ramsay and wife Tana are parents to Megan, 22, twins Holly and Jack, 21, Matilda, 19, and 22-month-old Oscar.

The F Word presenter previously came under fire for spending the first lockdown at his holiday home in Cornwall instead of staying at his London residence.

And in January it was revealed he had travelled to Costa Rica to film a new TV show during the UK's third national lockdown.
