Good Morning Britain star Kate Garraway red-faced after guest name blunder

Kate Garraway was left red-faced after a Good Morning Britain guest asked her to have another go when she got her surname wrong.

The TV presenter stumbled when she tried to pronounce Dr Shola Mos-Shogbamimu's name on the ITV morning show during a discussion about cancel culture - and got it all wrong.

“Let me do that again,” she said, looking flustered.

However, Garraway then seemed to decide against it and said to the lawyer and activist: “Dr Shola, you say your surname, because I’m useless this morning.”

However, the doctor asked the TV star to have another try.

“Ok so read it phonetically,” she advised.

“I’m not going to let you get away with that. Read it phonetically, just pronounce it as you see it.”

Garraway replied that she was “going to give it a go” and then sounded out the name correctly.

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - OCTOBER 10: Women's Rights Activist Dr. Shola Mos-Shogbamimu addresses a rally in Londons Hyde Park against governments implementation of pensions age equalisation policy, which increased the female state pension age from 60 to 66. Protesters call for fair transitional state pension arrangements as the current policy changes affect an estimated 3.9 million women who have to wait up to an extra six years to receive their pensions. Clapping, Dr Mos-Shogbamimu told her: “Well done!”

Still looking ruffled, Garraway explained: “By the way, I also stumble like that over Smith. So, you know, it’s nothing to do with anything else, I just struggle to get my words out most mornings!”

Viewers thought the whole exchange was a bit awkward.

“Poor Kate I was cringing,” one person posted on Twitter.

“Oh no @GMB @kategarraway that was chuffing awkward,” said another.

“Cringe - esp when Kate then says she often stumbles with the surname Smith,” said another, adding: “Awks.”

Another said: "Kate may not have meant to be rude... but claiming that she couldn't pronounce Dr Shola surname was wrong on all levels."
