Gemma Collins has said she had the "shock of her life" after her mum stopped breathing and was admitted to intensive care last week.

The former TOWIE star detailed her heartache with her following on Instagram on Tuesday where she revealed her mum remains in hospital. Joan was rushed to hospital last week and her daughter was told to prepare for the worst after she called for an ambulance.

However, the GC was pleased to share that her mum was on the mend after what had been a "hell of a time". She said: "My mum's really ill at the minute. She's in intensive care. It's been a hell of a time... She is on the mend."

Then the reality star shared a series of Instagram story picture posts explaining what had happened with her mum last week. Collins said she had the "shock of her life" when her mum fell ill.

Alongside a picture of her mum and herself, she wrote: "So last week I had the shock of my life when my mum stopped breathing. I called an ambulance and was told to prepare for the worst and would I like to resuscitate her."

Collins revealed her hope that her mum will get "much better soon" and she encouraged her followers to make the most of their time with their loved ones. She added: "It's been extremely tough but she is stable now and hopefully she will be much better soon."

The GC finished with: "No day is promised so make everyday count."

Collins has an incredibly close relationship with her mum who she counts as her best friend. Last year, Collins took part in the Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer. She spoke about the time when her mum Joan was diagnosed with breast cancer after having found a cancerous lump between her breast and armpit. Reflecting, the TV personality revealed she broke down in tears when she found out.

She told The Sun last year: "It was over the phone. I was in the back of a taxi in London and I was like, ‘Are you all right, mum? Where are you?’ — as we say every day, ten times a day. She said, ‘Ah I didn’t want to tell you, but I’ve had a lump in my breast. I was like, ‘What?’, and she said, ‘But it’s fine I’ve got the all-clear’. I was like, ‘Oh, my God. Why didn’t you tell me?"

The podcast host said her mum had kept it a secret while she was filming Diva Forever and had told her once she had the all-clear from doctors. She added: "It’s something that I’ve never spoken about. I was filming Diva Forever at the time so she never said a thing about the diagnosis, which must have been scary for her."

Over the years, she has shared details of their strong bond. The TV star credited her mum for encouraging her to be herself always and never to be shy.

"My mum grew up without any confidence and she always said, 'I never want you to be like that'," she said on Channel 4 documentary Gemma Collins: Self-Harm and Me, which aired in 2022.

"I was never allowed to be shy, it was always 'get up and perform Gemma, sing Madonna Gemma'. It was a bit much but if that's what makes her happy you know, but I weren't always in the mood."
