Eamonn Holmes announces birth of first grandchild on This Morning

Eamonn Holmes has become a grandad for the first time.

The This Morning host announced that his eldest son Declan and wife Jenny has welcomed a baby girl named Amelia.

Making the announcement on Tuesday’s episode of the daytime show, Holmes shared his pride at the new addition to his family.

Opening the show, Holmes said: "Some things have changed since I last saw you yesterday, and that is..."

Wife Ruth Langsford then declared: “You're a granddad!”

As the production team cheered him on, the proud grandpa later asked viewers at home to come up with potential names Amelia can grow up to call him.

“We came up with Grumps,” Langsford joked, “but he wasn't too keen on that one.”

"I've got people getting in touch with me about glamorous grandfather competitions and all sorts of things like that,” Holmes added.

“But no, my friend Bill has anointed himself Papa and I like it.

"It's like the Pope! There's an infallibility that goes with it. So I'd quite like my grandchildren to call me Papa. That would be nice."

"Congratulations, Declan and Jenny,” Langsford added. “We're very, very excited and can't wait to meet her."

Declan is Holmes’ eldest son from his previous marriage to Gabrielle Holmes. The pair, who split in 1994, also share daughter Rebecca, and a second son, Niall.

Holmes and Langsford, who first met in 1997, had their son Jack in 2002 and got married in 2010.

Holmes announced Declan’s happy news back in April, when he and Langsford returned to This Morning to host the Easter break.

“I didn't think I would be so happy, but when they told me the news I got very emotional about it,” he said at the time. "I just thought, 'Me? I'm so young and vibrant.'

"What lovely news, regeneration. The old guard goes out, the new guard comes in.

"Declan is the same age that I was when I, well, your mummy, had you.

"Jenny – we wish you well. The baby is due in July sometime."

Holmes and Langsford will be hosting This Morning for the next six weeks, covering the summer holiday while regular hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby are away.
