The Duchess of Cambridge is a peacemaker who is "trying to mediate" in the Royal Family according to her uncle.

Gary Goldsmith told Closer that the duchess "is about making friends" as he issued a warning that Prince Harry should "get a grip" otherwise there would be no relationship for him to rebuild with his brother Prince William.

His comments come amid an ongoing feud between Harry and the rest of the Royal Family, after he and Meghan chose to step back from their senior royal roles and settle in California.

Harry recently accused the Royal Family of "total neglect" when he was a senior royal, and said that he wanted to "break the cycle of pain and suffering" from his own childhood as he raises his son Archie and unborn daughter.

The Duke of Sussex, 36, briefly came back to the UK to attend the funeral of Prince Philip, his late grandfather, and was seen speaking to William and Kate, with Kate hailed as the family member who engineered the moment.

But a five-part documentary series and an interview with US presenter Dax Shepard did not give royal watchers hope of a reunion.

Goldsmith said: "The harsh truth – in my opinion – is that if Harry doesn’t get a grip and stop this self-indulgent episode, there will soon be no common ground or relationship to rebuild.

"But if anyone can bring peace to the royals, Kate can. Kate is a brilliant arbiter and peacemaker. Every bone in her body is about making friends and doing the best she can... She’s trying to mediate."

Goldsmith said he had initially had sympathy for Harry when he left the family, but added, "everyone is astonished" by the revelations the royal has made.

Her uncle told 60 Minutes Australia in May that Kate was ready to become Queen Consort now, saying she was "born ready".

He said: "She's absolutely perfect for that role. Obviously I'm a bit biased, but wouldn't William and Kate be great at it?"

Goldsmith admitted to being "embarrassed" that he had called Harry and Meghan "muppets" to the Australian news show, but said "there's a whole nation that's massively disappointed" after the interview the couple did with Oprah Winfrey.

Asked if the controversy around the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had made Kate look better, Goldsmith said: "Yes."

Prince William and Kate have just finished a week long tour of Scotland and are thought to be enjoying some time with their children, Princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte, during the half term break.

The couple had to step up their workload when the Sussexes stepped back and were relied upon during the worst of the pandemic because their age meant they were at lower risk of severe COVID-19 effects.

While Charles and the Queen were more cautious in their return to in-person engagements, William and Kate have been able to go out and about.
