Drag Race UK star Veronica Green shared a picture of soldiers in drag as she noted that “ignorance, bigotry and homophobia” are alive and kicking.

The TV star took to Twitter after a news article about her and fellow drag queen Tia Kofi answering school children’s questions on gender identity and equality attracted some negative comments.

Sharing the story, she wrote: “Reading the comments below this tweet remind me why #pride is so important. The LGBTQIA+ community is still outnumbered by those who fear, hate, ridicule and wish us harm.

"Ignorance, bigotry and homophobia on full display today.”

Green than tweeted a black and white image of troops in the Second World War in drag.

According to an accompanying article about the image, it was taken in 1940 at the base of the Royal Artillery Coastal Defence Battery at Shornemead Fort in Kent. The troops had been rehearsing in drag for one of their shows.

The drag performer tweeted: “The actual men who gave their lives for us in WW2.

“Here’s some really great HISTORICAL footage of our troops in drag.

“Don’t tell me when drag is and isn’t appropriate when the troops were in drag DURING A WORLD WAR.”

Green got plenty of support on social media after sharing the image.

"You both made the children so happy, they loved every second of it. Thanks for spreading nothing but kindness, strength and acceptance,” said one person.

“TELL THEM ms green!!!!!” posted another, while another simply wrote: "YAAAAS!"
