Cadbury to launch first plant-based chocolate bar
Cadbury has announced the launch of its first ever plant-based chocolate bar.
The long-awaited dairy-free bar will be available to buy from Sainsbury's in November and from newsagents and supermarkets across the UK from January 2022 at a cost of £2.50.
It's made with a blend of cocoa, almond paste and rice extract to create chocolate with a lusciously smooth texture, and comes in two flavours - Cadbury Plant Bar Smooth Chocolate and Cadbury Plant Bar Smooth Chocolate with Salted Caramel pieces.
This marks a milestone for the iconic British brand which promises "a glass and a half full" in every bar. Remarkably, the company issued a formal apology for taking so long to release an alternative which can be enjoyed by vegans and flexitarians to their much-loved Cadbury Dairy Milk.
Cadbury's Marketing Manager Michael Moore said: "We’ve worked hard to add this delicious, dairy-free option to our iconic range, and we can only apologise for making our fans wait.
"Ensuring we deliver against our commitment to exceptional flavour has taken quite some time, but as of November, the wait is over.”
The news is likely to go down well with vegans in the UK.
In 2019, the vegan organisation Veganuary issued a poll where it asked people which treats they missed the most since switching to a plant-based diet.
Cadbury’s Dairy Milk came out on top with 28% of votes.
Cadbury's is the latest big brand to launch plant-based alternatives.
Yesterday Swiss company Nestlé announced new vegan egg and shrimp products.
The vegan-friendly egg, called the Garden Gourmet vEGGie, contains soy protein and omega-3 fatty acids.
It can be scrambled, or used in a frittata and as a cake ingredient, just like a real egg.
The alternative shrimp, branded as Garden Gourmet Vrimp, is made from seaweed and pea protein with paprika and carrot used to give it an orange colour on the outside.
While the two products will initially launch in some European markets, including Switzerland, Nestlé has not announced when they will be available in the UK.
Just last month, Greggs launched a brand new Autumn menu in the UK which includes two new vegan rolls and hash browns.
