Angelina Jolie recalled feeling 'hurt' after Brad Pitt chose to work with Harvey Weinstein: 'We fought about it'
Angelina Jolie is speaking out about feeling “hurt” after her then-partner Brad Pitt chose to work with Harvey Weinstein.
In a new interview with The Guardian, the Maleficent actress opened up how the film producer, who was convicted of rape in February 2020 following dozens of misconduct and assault allegations, attempted to assault her when she was working on the film Playing By Heart.
Jolie said of the experience, “If you get yourself out of the room, you think he attempted but didn’t, right? The truth is that the attempt and the experience of the attempt is an assault.”
She added that the situation was “beyond a pass,” and that it was “something I had to escape.” She recalled telling her first husband, Jonny Lee Miller, to tell other people in the industry about Weinstein, and not to let “girls go alone with him.”
While the Oscar winner did not work with Weinstein after the experience, she recalled her disappointment when her now ex-husband, Pitt, chose to star in Quentin Tarantino’s 2009 film Inglourious Basterds, which was co-produced by The Weinstein Company.
“We fought about it,” she said of Pitt, who she separated from in 2016 after two years of marriage. “Of course it hurt.”
Pitt would also work with Weinstein again for 2012’s Killing Them Softly.
Pitt’s ex-girlfriend Gwyneth Paltrow also alleged that Pitt was aware of Weinstein’s inappropriate behavior towards women. According to Paltrow, Pitt even threatened Weinstein directly in 1995, after Paltrow confided that the producer made a pass at her in a hotel room. In a 2018 interview with Howard Stern, Paltrow said of the Ad Astra star, “He leveraged his fame and power to protect me at a time when I didn’t have fame and power yet.”
The actor confirmed the story to CNN in 2019, telling Christine Amanpour, "At that moment, I was just a boy from the Ozarks on the playground and that’s how we confronted things. I just wanted to make sure nothing was going to happen further, because Paltrow was going to do two [more] films [with Weinstein]. I think the interesting thing is that we, Hollywood specifically, but the workplace, men and women’s dynamics is being recalibrated, recalibrated in a very good way that is long overdue. And I do think that’s an important story to tell."
