Alison Hammond criticised for praising Rishi Sunak on This Morning

Alison Hammond has been criticised for praising prime minister Rishi Sunak during an appearance on This Morning.

Sunak spoke on the breakfast show just days after the conclusion of the Conservative Party Conference where he made a number of controversial policy decisions including the scrapping of HS2, support of Suella Braverman's comments regarding gay migrants and the ban of transgender people from single sex hospital wards.

While talking with Sunak, Hammond praised the "amazing" speech his wife gave before his policy announcements and generally gushed around the prime minister.

Hammond has since received a great deal of criticism for the cosy nature of the interview, particularly from the LGBTQ community given she has become something of a gay icon.

One viewer wrote on social media: “Actually sickening watching Alison Hammond be up his a*se after he pledged to make life harder for LGB and particularly T people - the very community who made Hammond into the camp icon she profits off being today."

Another said: “You can’t be a gay icon when you have trans blood on your hands. We’re a community and if you’re not an ally to all you’re an ally to none.”

Just May from Ru Paul's Drag Race UK also criticised Hammond's approach in the interview: “The LGBTQ+ people who have loved and supported your career have questions about how easy you were on the current PM. He has vocalised awful views on our trans siblings this week, and you didn’t question him on it…”

Hammond has yet to respond to criticism of the interview and it is not the first time This Morning has been slammed for its chats with prime ministers.

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield were previously criticised for taking a selfie with Boris Johnson in the run up to the 2019 election and accused of "cuddling up" to the former PM.
