Paul Hollywood shares 80s throwback ahead of 'Great British Bake Off' theme first

Ahead of Great British Bake Off's first ever 80s Week on Tuesday evening, Paul Hollywood has shared his own throwback from the decade.

While he may be more of a silver fox nowadays, Hollywood was sporting dark locks three decades ago although his piercing blue eyes are unmistakable in the photograph.

"Here's one from the late 80s, it's also the theme for the Bake Off tonight, "THE 80s"...! 8pm on @channel4.

"Quiche, vol au vents and custard slices at the ready X #bakeoff #gbbo #getbaking #staysafe #80s," he wrote on Instagram.

The bakers will be tasked with preparing a quiche for the signature challenge, a retro dessert for the technical and a decadent ice cream cake for the showstopper.

It's a first for the Channel 4 show which comes directly after another debut theme, Japanese Week.

However, the theme received criticism from some viewers who pointed out the bakes the contestants were challenged to make strayed from traditional Japanese baking as they were closer to other types of cuisine.

In the technical challenge the bakers were asked to make a mille crepe cake – a traditionally French dish – flavoured with matcha powder, used at Japanese tea ceremonies.

Japanese actor and Torchwood star Naoko Mori tweeted: "A tiny token sprinkle of Matcha powder on a pancake doth not a Japanese make."

She added she was "baffled, saddened and offended" as to the naming of the episode as "Japanese Week".

"In this age (and especially in the recent climate) one would think – or at least, hope – proper research and fact checking is done before an episode like this is made," she shared with her followers.
