Lena Dunham explains what happened with 'awkward' Brad Pitt kiss photo

Updated

Lena Dunham has clarified what actually went on at the Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood London premiere last summer after photos suggested she awkwardly tried to plant a kiss on Brad Pitt.

The Girls star said that while the photos – which led some to accuse her of acting "inappropriately" – may look uncomfortable, she would "never force a kiss" on Pitt, 56, whom she considers a friend.

“I don’t know if you remember there was a sort of awkward photo taken of the two of us," the 33-year-old shared on Watch What Happens Live with host Andy Cohen.

"Well, the way the internet read it was I had somehow physically accosted him causing him a great deal of stress… I would never force a kiss on Brad Pitt.

"I respect him far too much as an artist and a friend.”

Dunham said Pitt had sensed her nerves that night and the pair snuck off together to eat some pizza, before he gave a ring to her after she told him how much she liked it.

Both actors had roles in the Quentin Tarantino film, but Dunham said that they did know each other beforehand and she was delighted when Pitt greeted her enthusiastically on set.

She said he "picked [her] up and spun [her] around", adding: "It was like in one of those movies where the nerd shows up at the prom and the hottest guy at school is like, ‘Would you care to dance?'”

Dunham was part of the ensemble cast as Gypsy, a member of the Manson family in the film, while Pitt picked up the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor at the 2020 ceremony for his role as Cliff Booth.
