Piers Morgan has sparked a backlash after admitting he splashed out more than £4,000 on expensive champagne at his Christmas party.

The Good Morning Britain star shared a picture of his bar bill on Twitter after the bash, after confessing: “My head hurts.”

The receipt in Morgan’s name showed he had forked out £4,200 for Bollinger during the do in London.

Teasing cricket star Kevin Pieterson – a good friend of his - Morgan wrote alongside the receipt: "Morning Kevin @KP24, I asked them to serve only YOU Prosecco, the rest of us had Bollinger...”

Morgan also bought plenty of bottles of wine and other booze at the party, which was attended by the likes of Susanna Reid and Holly Willoughby.

However, the extravagant affair has not gone down well on social media, with people branding it “obscene” and saying it was insensitive of Morgan to post the bill when other people are struggling.

One person tweeted: “Extraordinary that you’d tweet this tbf. We all know ur a wealthy guy and good luck to you but to display it and show off in this way is, frankly, grotesque.”

One said: “£4k on one night's champers, I don't actually care you can afford it, good luck to you, but bragging about it is cheap.”

“Oooo look at me. I have money. I’ll show everyone how I splash it on twitter,” said another.

“People are dying due to hunger this is ridiculous,” said another person.

One lady tweeted: “I had my works night out last week. Tenner in the kitty and that lasted all night. This is obscene.”

A teacher posted: “As a teacher who works incredibly hard, just like to point out that it takes me nearly 3 months to earn what you are clearly so proud of spending on 1 bottle of Bollinger. Just putting that out there Piers.”

But the star replied: “It was 60 bottles, so unless it takes you three months to earn £70, relax.”

The party was held at the Scarsdale Tavern, with other guests including Morgan’s Good Morning Britain co-star Kate Garraway and Christine and Frank Lampard.
