Paul Gascoigne cried on live TV as he admitted he would never change, despite being tried for sexual assault for kissing a stranger on a train.

Gazza - who last week was found not guilty of sexual assault - wiped away tears on Good Morning Britain as he said: "I feel like I've spent a whole year telling people I did nothing wrong."

The 52-year-old former England footballer was accused of sexual assualt after a woman accused him of "forcibly" kissing her on a train travelling from York to Durham in August last year. He said he was comforting her after another passenger had called her "fat and ugly".

Gazza said: "I admitted that to the police from the start - I gave her a peck... I didn't look at it in a sexual way."

He added: "I don't think I'll ever change. I am who I am, I don't think it's right to be called fat and ugly."

The ex-football star - whose battle with alcoholism has been well documented in the media over the years - revealed he is six months sober but had struggled to resist turning to drink during the court case.

Gazza said: "It was definitely [a test], even two days ago I felt like I wanted a drink and I just rang my sponsor... and told him how I felt.

"A lot of people would go out and celebrate [being found not guilty]. I didn't feel I had anything to celebrate because it has been a tough year. I would say the rest of my life depended on this."

He revealed he had kept himself busy by indulging his passion for fishing and attending regular counselling sessions.

Recalling the incident he said: "I was on the train and a couple of women wanted selfies. When I got up someone next to us said you don't want a photo with her she's fat and ugly.

Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne with Katie Davies, Personal Manager for Paul Gascoigne M&N Management, leaving Teesside Crown Court, Middlesbrough, after he was cleared of all charges of sexually assaulting a woman on a train.

"I went and sat next to her and I said, 'You're not fat and ugly you're beautiful inside and out', I learned that in the treatment centres."

Gazza revealed he is working on a movie about his life and that he was proud to have been named a UEFA Ambassador for Euro 2020.

He laughed: "The first person I text was [fellow former Newcastle United player] Alan Shearer. I said look what I've been through and now I'm an ambassador!"
