Newlywed Rio Ferdinand has admitted he burst into tears when he saw his bride Kate Wright walking down the aisle with his daughter as bridesmaid.

The former footballer married ex-reality TV star Wright in Turkey on Friday, making her stepmother to his three children - Lorenz, 13, and Tate, 11, and Tia, eight - who accompanied her into the ceremony.

Speaking to OK! magazine about their magical day, the couple said that it had been a very emotional celebration.

Ferdinand said: “I cried as soon as the day started. Seeing Tia walk up the aisle before Kate set me off. It was just so emotional.

“There was just no going back on the emotion, that’s why I had to keep my shades on!

“Seeing Tate and Lorenz walk Kate down the aisle was particularly poignant and we wouldn’t have wanted to do it any other way.”

Ferdinand lost his first wife Rebecca Ellison to breast cancer in 2015, and had been bringing up their three children alone until he met Wright.

His new bride told the magazine: “Seeing Rio at the altar made me feel so happy, I couldn’t wait to get to him, especially as he was so emotional. It was everything that I had imagined it to be.”

Ferdinand, 40, is said to have celebrated his second chance at love with Wright, 28, at the D Maris Bay Hotel in Marmaris with a lavish three-day party for friends and family.

His children were also a big part of their engagement, looking on as Ferdinand proposed to Wright in Dubai late in 2018.

She apparently has a close bond with the children, and has previously said that she gave up her reality TV career on Towie to provide a stable home for them.

Wright told The Sun earlier this year: “I had two choices. I’m in this world with lots of drama and then I met Rio and the children and, I thought, ‘I’m with these kids, who have lost their mum, they don’t need a woman who is out all the time. They need someone at home with them.’”
