James Cameron claims Wonder Woman film was 'a step backward'

Updated

Director James Cameron has criticised the recent Wonder Woman film as 'a step back' for women in Hollywood.

The Titanic and Terminator film-maker told the Guardian: "All of the self-congratulatory back-patting Hollywood's been doing over Wonder Woman has been so misguided.

"She's an objectified icon, and it's just male Hollywood doing the same old thing! I'm not saying I didn't like the movie but, to me, it's a step backwards."

Cameron's comments were soon trending on Twitter, with many women disagreeing with his opinion.

In response, Wonder Woman's director Patty Jenkins tweeted: "James Cameron's inability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or stands for, to women all over the world is unsurprising as, though, he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman."

The long-awaited Wonder Woman movie has been a critical and financial hit since it was released earlier this year and has made Israeli actress Gal Gadot a household name.
