Ed Sheeran to battle grime stars at Mercury Music Prize

Nominations announced for September awards

Ed Sheeran was a surprise name at this year's Mercury Music Prize nominations.

The singer's third album ÷ is on the shortlist, chosen by a panel of judges, including Marcus Mumford, Jessie Ware and Jamie Cullum.

The Mercury Music Prize is renowned for putting the spotlight on new and underappreciated artists, so Sheeran's appearance was more of a mainstream departure from their usual nominees.

The winner will be announced at a star-studded ceremony in London on 14 September.
