Jodie Whittaker named as the 13th Doctor Who

Jodie Whittaker has been named as the first female Doctor Who.

The Broadchurch star, 35, was announced as the 13th Doctor in a trailer broadcast on BBC1 following the end of the Wimbledon Men's Final on Sunday.

Whittaker will take over from current Time Lord Peter Capaldi in the upcoming Christmas special.

Whittaker said: "I'm beyond excited to begin this epic journey - with Chris (Chibnall - showrunner) and with every Whovian on this planet.

"It's more than an honour to play the Doctor. It means remembering everyone I used to be, while stepping forward to embrace everything the Doctor stands for: hope. I can't wait."
