Tom Cruise has delighted fans after confirming a long-awaited sequel to Top Gun is "definitely happening".
After over a year of rumours, the actor revealed he planned to reprise his role as Lieutenant Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell.
Appearing on Australian TV show Sunrise on Tuesday, the 54-year-old said: "It's true. It's true. I'm going to start filming it probably in the next year.
"I know. It's happening. It is definitely happening... you're the first people that I've said this to."
Top Gun, starring Cruise, Val Kilmer and Kelly McGillis, made $356million when it was released in 1986.
