X Factor 'to face shake-up with week of live heats'

Updated

The X Factor is said to be lining up a Britain's Got Talent-style revamp with finalists chosen during a week of live heats.

Bosses at the ITV singing contest are apparently keen to shake up the format of the programme and are considering doing away with weeks of live finals shows in favour of seven heats, similar to the set-up at the broadcaster's other Simon Cowell-fronted series.

The Sun reported that producers feared viewers were growing tired of a long period of live shows after the audition rounds and are planning a makeover of seven heats and a finale in one bumper week.

An insider was quoted as saying: "The X Factor executives feel it needs a shake-up with big changes to the format.

"They have been discussing having just a few weeks of live shows - so people get to know the singers - and then one big finals week.

"They think viewers would prefer one week of great TV, with star performers.

"BGT is a huge success, so they could take inspiration from worse places."

The X Factor has been contacted for comment.
