Sherlock's John and Mary Watson's baby name is revealed in newspaper ad

Updated:

Who says that a fictional baby can't have an official name announcement?

Fans of Sherlock have been left delighted as the name of the TV drama's John and Mary Watson - played by Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington - has finally been revealed as Rosamund in The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

The message reads: "Congratulations! To John and Mary Watson on the birth of their beautiful baby daughter, Rosamund Mary Watson.

"From your friends, Mrs Hudson, Molly and Sherlock, although he hasn't helped us with this at all as he's always on the phone."

We're glad to see that those behind the announcement were able to slip a joke in there about Benedict Cumberbatch's leading character at the very least.

And the little quip about Sherlock always being on the phone might give us a clue to events in the forthcoming fourth series.

The announcement of John and Mary's baby name came hours after a new trailer for the new series of Sherlock aired.

The intense clip shows baddie Toby Jones and Sherlock looking like they'll come to blows, and Mycroft Holmes acting as brooding as ever in what will no doubt be the darkest series yet.

Sherlock series four kicks off on New Year's Day at 8.30pm on BBC One.
