La La Land takes best film at Critics' Choice Awards

Musical La La Land was named best film at the Critics' Choice Awards, where Natalie Portman and Casey Affleck took home the top acting honours.

The star-studded ceremony, which recognises both film and television talent, saw La La Land win eight awards, including best director for Damien Chazelle.

Natalie won best actress for her performance in Jackie as former US first lady Jackie Kennedy, while Casey received the best actor award for his portrayal as a troubled janitor in drama Manchester By The Sea.

There was British success on the night as Thandie Newton was named best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in Westworld and James Corden's Late Late Show won best talk show.

Damien paid tribute to La La Land stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, who missed out on individual honours, as they collected the best picture award.

He told them: "Both of you (gave) more than I ever could have expected from actors... just the most transformative performances I've ever been lucky enough to film."

John Lithgow was named best supporting actor in a drama series for his performance as Sir Winston Churchill in The Crown, the Netflix drama about the early reign of the Queen.

On stage, the actor, who was celebrating his 35th wedding anniversary, said: "I have to thank one of the greatest and most complex men of the 20th century, Winston Churchill, who's now my guy."

American Crime Story: The People Versus OJ Simpson won four awards including best movie made for television or limited series.

Courtney B Vance - who played Simpson's lawyer Johnnie Cochran - won best actor in a limited series or movie made for television, Sarah Paulson was named best actress for her portrayal of prosecutor Marcia Clark and Sterling K Brown picked up best supporting actor for his performance as prosecutor Christopher Darden.

Game Of Thrones won best drama series, while Silicon Valley picked up the best comedy series prize.

Alec Baldwin was named best guest performer in a comedy series for his portrayal of Donald Trump on Saturday Night Live.

It comes after the US president-elect repeatedly criticised the sketch show and Alec's performance, tweeting that the programme is "totally biased, not funny and the Baldwin impersonation just can't get any worse".

Kate McKinnon, who has played Hillary Clinton opposite Alec's Trump, won best actress in a comedy series.

Evan Rachel Wood won best actress in a drama series for her role as robot Dolores in Westworld. Bob Odenkirk was named best actor in a drama series for Better Call Saul, the spin-off show to Breaking Bad.

Comedian TJ Miller hosted the awards show in Santa Monica, California, two days after he was arrested for allegedly slapping an Uber driver.

TJ, 35, did not directly mention his arrest during his opening monologue but said he wanted to "talk about the real elephant in the room".

He then joked: "Yes, it's the 31st anniversary of A Chorus Line on Broadway."

Viola Davis was named best supporting actress for her role in film drama Fences. She also picked up the inaugural See Her Award, which honours actresses who redefine the portrayal of women in the media, after becoming the first black woman to win the Emmy for best actress in a drama last year.

Mahershala Ali won best supporting actor for his role in Moonlight, which follows a gay black man coming of age in Miami. Disney film Zootopia won best animated feature.

The best original screenplay award was tied between Damien for La La Land and Kenneth Lonergan for Manchester By The Sea.

After it was announced that Silicon Valley had won best comedy series, an actor from another show nominated in the category walked on stage to give an acceptance speech.

Lakeith Stanfield from comedy drama Atlanta said on stage: "I want to thank everybody for honouring us in this way. We worked very hard on Silicon Valley and here we are. Thank you."

After Lakeith walked off stage, Silicon Valley executive producer Tom Lassally told the audience: "I have no idea who that was."
