Strictly Come Dancing's Ed Balls: I'll be rumbled by viewers

Ed Balls has insisted he won't last too much longer on Strictly - because viewers will discover that he's not so talented on the dancefloor.

The former shadow chancellor dropped into Radio 4´s Today studios to have a conversation about central bank independence - but also ended talking about Strictly Come Dancing.

He told the programme: "This Saturday in Blackpool I am doing a jive. I've discovered that I am coming down on a rope, not fired out of a cannon. It will be a proper jive. Even Lord Sugar is now backing my efforts so I must be doing okay."

Asked if he would be following in John Sergeant's footsteps by bowing out before he gets too far, Ed, who will be jiving to Great Balls Of Fire at the weekend, said viewers would eventually stop voting for him.

"As it goes on in this competition, I think the dances become a bigger deal, but in the end you have got to respect the voters," he said.

"The public decides who becomes president or prime minister or who stays on Strictly," he said.

"And while the public are voting for me I'm really grateful. I'm going to thank them. I'm going to keep trying to do better. But in the end they might spot I'm not the best dancer.

"I think if you have got a bet on me - I would cash out."

Today presenter Nick Robinson observed of Ed's entrance: "He did a little dance when he walked into the studio, while co-host Justin Webb said: "He skipped in, didn't he."

Fellow contestant Ore Oduba, who is celebrating his 30th birthday, told Good Morning Britain: "I think we're going to see, this weekend, the phenomenon exploding. Ed isn't a novelty act. Certainly any more."

Ore enjoyed a slice of cake on the ITV show with his dance partner Joanne Clifton.

And Judge Rinder told Lorraine he would be channelling the Spice Girls into his salsa at the weekend, promising it would be "quite something".

Asked which Spice Girl he would like to be, Judge Rinder, who is reported to be getting advice from Baby Spice for his Blackpool routine, replied: "A happy marriage between Baby and blonde and the Scary one."
