Tinder date in Turkey turns out to be 'more scary' than the coup

A man who went on a Tinder date to Turkey with a woman he had only known for 12 hours said he is going on a boys' holiday to Ibiza to get over it.

Phil Stephenson, 22, from Darlington, agreed to fly out with Nicole Graham, 22, from South Shields, South Tyneside, when one of her family members dropped out because of a passport issue.

They had matched on Tinder the day before but had not met before. And the date was not a success, even before the military coup on Friday night.

Stephenson, now back in the UK, said: "I was more scared of her than whatever was going on in Turkey. As soon as we got on the plane she was wanting to hold hands.

"She was a nice girl, don't get me wrong. For me it was just a bit of banter, like two mates going away together. Unfortunately it was a Tinder date that went wrong. It was spontaneous.

"I've booked a flight to Ibiza with the boys and we're going on Tuesday. I'm going to enjoy a lads' holiday."

Graham, a nurse, has opted to stay in Marmaris.

She told reporters: "I feel safe at the moment. I can't tell you how happy I am to see the back of Phil."
