Phil Mitchell was left reassessing everything he thought he knew about his family on Monday night's episode of EastEnders.
It's an accepted rule of the Mitchell clan that no-one grasses on anyone else to the police, but it turns out Peggy (Dame Barbara Windsor) has been hiding a secret from her family for decades.
With emotions already running high for Peggy's funeral, Sharon (Letitia Dean) discovered from Aunt Sal that Peggy had given the statement to the police that put her abusive husband Eric behind bars.
The Mitchell matriarch attempted to save her son Phil (Steven McFadden) from Eric's beatings by ensuring that he was locked up after a bungled post office robbery.
"It was the only way she could think to get rid of him. She was protecting you," Sharon told an emotional Phil.
It gave Phil the strength to stand up in the Queen Vic and deliver a touching eulogy to his mother, telling everyone to celebrate her life with dancing and music.
Topping off the fitting send-off, Phil even did his best "get outta my pub" Peggy impression.
There was another shock for viewers as Grant Mitchell (Ross Kemp) made a brief surprise appearance at the funeral.
Sister Sam (Danniella Westbrook) had told the family that Grant would not be coming, so fans weren't expecting him to turn up.
He kept it a secret from his own family too, watching Peggy laid to rest from afar, but there'll be plenty more of Grant in the coming weeks.
Everyone praised Steve for his acting in the touching scene:
