David Bowie's music to be performed by Glastonbury Festival acts

The late David Bowie will loom large at Glastonbury Festival this year, where tributes to the pop star will take centre stage.

Festival headliners Muse, Coldplay and Adele will perform on the Pyramid stage, which will be decorated with a giant metal Aladdin Sane lightning flash in memory of Bowie.

The Starman singer died aged 69 in January, having played the Somerset festival twice. Footage from his 2000 appearance is due to be broadcast around the site at this year's festival, while the Park Stage will host an "intimate" musical tribute to Bowie's album Heroes.

Performers will incorporate Bowie covers into their sets, as well as paying tribute to pop star Prince, who died earlier this year.

The festival will also look back on some other old favourites, as Glastonbury veterans Muse and Coldplay will be returning to the site at Worthy Farm.

Coldplay will be the first band to headline at Worthy Farm in Somerset four times, after outings in 2002, 2005 and 2011.

Setting their own record, rock band Muse will perform on Friday and will become the first band ever to have headlined every night of the festival, after playing on Saturday night in 2010 and Sunday in 2004.

There will also be plenty of new acts at the festival, with Adele performing at Glastonbury for the first time ever.

The announcement surprised many, as Adele has previously said she was put off by the big crowds at Glastonbury. She told Capital Radio: "I think I have made myself pretty clear on Glastonbury. The crowds are too big. I don't know if I could do it."

The crowd will be unavoidable, as 175,000 people will descend on the festival site after the gates open at 8am on Wednesday, with music starting at 11am on Friday.

But Adele attended the festival last year to watch acts including Kanye West, and revealed to fans during a concert at the O2 Arena in March: "I wanted to do it last year but my record wasn't ready. And to the people who say I am too boring to headline, you're more f****** boring for moaning about me headlining."

While the Met Office has an "optimistic" forecast for the festival weekend, with light showers, lengthy dry spells and periods of sunshine predicted, festivalgoers may have to contend with waterlogged fields as they pitch their tents.

Glastonbury Festival will take place from June 22 to 26. Acts scheduled to perform also include Ellie Goulding, ZZ Top, Disclosure, Wolf Alice, Tame Impala, Beck, Stormzy, Madness and Foals.
