Shayne Ward, who has quickly become a fan favourite as Aidan Connor on Coronation Street, has said he once auditioned for Channel 4 teen soap Hollyoaks.
During an interview with Digital Spy, he called the decision to try out for the Chester-set series as "a learning curve".
"I did auditions a long time ago, which was a learning curve for me," the Manchester-born star said.
"There was Hollyoaks, and I think Casualty was one too. This was so back in the day and it was the quickest of readings."
He added: "I'm so happy, as I wouldn't have had a clue what was going on there! What helped me with Coronation Street was that I did get a year under my belt doing a show called Rock of Ages in the West End.
Shayne received a nomination at the 2012 What's On Stage Awards for his 2011-2014 role in Rock Of Ages in the West End. He also appeared in Jeff Wayne's stage version of War Of The Worlds.
Winner of The X Factor in 2005, the 31-year-old was the first of the new Connor clan to arrive in Weatherfield. He has successfully made the transition from a career off the back of a talent series to acting.
As the boss of knicker factory Underworld, Shayne has brought some much needed eye candy to the cobbles.
He won the best newcomer prize at the National Television Awards in January and was also nominated for the same prize at last month's British Soap Awards.
Shayne has talked about the common ground he shares with his Coronation Street character as he teased exciting forthcoming storylines.
"There's a lot of things going on and I do want to explore the more Irish side to it as well which I've expressed because the character is Manc-Irish the same as me," he told The Sun.
Aidan's romance with Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) has already seen the couple dubbed as one of the hottest pairings in soap.
