The 88th Academy Awards - Arrivals - Los Angeles

Oscar winner Brie Larson is apparently the favourite to star in Captain Marvel, the company's first film to feature a female superhero.

Brie has long been an indie darling for her work in films like Short Term 12 and her recent award-winning turn in Room.

She is branching out into major blockbusters when she appears in monster movie Kong: Skull Island but this would be her first superhero adventure.

Marvel is the hero name of Carol Danvers, an Air Force pilot whose DNA is fused with that of an alien during an accident.

This gives her the superpowers of strength, energy projection and flight.

Sources tell Variety Brie is already in talks to take on the part.

The film doesn't have a director yet but the script has been written by Nicole Perlman, who co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy, and Meg LeFauve, who co-wrote Pixar's Inside Out.
