Actress Sara Ramirez has confirmed she is hanging up her scalpel on Grey's Anatomy after 10 years with the show.
The Mexican star, who plays surgeon Callie Torres, announced on Twitter that she was taking "welcome time off" from the medical drama.
In her message, which has been re-tweeted nearly 5,000 times, Sara said she was "deeply grateful" to the cast and crew on the programme.
She also praised the show's producer Shonda Rhimes and said she looked forward to "always being part of the Shondaland family".
Bisexual character Callie and her female romances were a television rarity when they were first introduced as they were both played by cast members rather than a star and a guest actor.
As the latest season of Grey's Anatomy ended on America's ABC television network, Callie was preparing to move from Seattle to New York. A twist in her custody dispute over her daughter Sofia was part of Thursday's season 12 finale.
