Vanessa Hudgens to star in a new TV series which is nothing like High School Musical

Vanessa Hudgens has said she is "so excited" about Powerless, her new comedy series set in the DC Comics world.

US network NBC said on Wednesday that it has ordered the 30-minute sitcom for the 2016-17 season.

In Powerless, the 27-year-old High School Musical star will play Emily, a spunky young insurance adjuster specialising in covering normal people against damage caused by the crimefighting superheroes.

It's when she stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures, after an epic battle messes up her commute, that she accidentally becomes a cult hero in her own right ... even if it's just to her group of quirky work colleagues.

Now, while she navigates her everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn't always require superpowers.

Joining Vanessa will be Firefly's Alan Tudyk as her boss, as well as Community's Danny Pudi as Teddy and Girls star Christina Kirk.

DC character Crimson Fox (Atlin Mitchell) will also have a role, but exactly what that will be is being kept under wraps.

In the meantime, expect more series orders and cancellations from the US networks in the next few days.
