Former Doctors actress Pearl Mackie is the new Doctor Who companion.
Pearl will star alongside Peter Capaldi in the long-running BBC One drama, taking on the part of Bill.
The news was announced at half time during the FA Cup semi-final between victors Manchester United and unlucky Everton.
Talking about her new role, she said: "I'm incredibly excited to be joining the Doctor Who family. It's such an extraordinary British institution, I couldn't be prouder to call the Tardis my home."
Pearl praised her co-star. "Peter Capaldi is such a brilliant actor, and his Doctor is such a wacky and wonderful character, I can't wait to see what adventures are in store for him and Bill throughout time and space."
Pearl takes over from Jenna Coleman as the Doctor's assistant, but who is she? Here are five things you should know about her.

Pearl hails from Brixton in south London.

She trained as an actor at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, graduating in 2010.

Pearl isn't fluent in the language of The Time Lord's home planet, but she does speak French and Spanish.

Pearl is currently performing in the National Theatre's West End production of The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time.
