The Little Britain star, 44, said Scotland Yard had informed him of the crime and he apologised to fans who had not received a reply to letters they had sent.

David has written six books for HarperCollins, with Demon Dentist, Ratburger and Gangsta Granny all becoming children's best-sellers.

According to the publisher's website his seventh book is due to be released in November.
