Tune in for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012

Updated

It's that time of year again when Brits across the country will settle down to enjoy a night of Europop, unpronounceable names, tactical voting (allegedly) and Graham Norton's acerbic wit.

Yes, people. It's Eurovision.

Having taken the prize last year, Azerbaijan will play host to the 57th Eurovision Song Contest with the country's capital, Baku, welcoming 43 contestants from across Europe.

This year, the nation's hopes lie with 75-year-old crooner Engelbert Humperdinck. Best known for his 1967 hit Release Me, the man once dubbed the 'king of romance' will perform Love Will Set You Free, a tale of heartbreak, co-written by Ivor Novello award-winning Sacha Skarbek, who has previously worked with the likes of Adele and Lana Del Rey.

Singing legend Humperdinck said he considered the opportunity to represent the UK "an absolute honour", and told the BBC: "I'm excited and raring to go and want the nation to get behind me!"

Of course, it won't be plain sailing for Engelbert. Currently at the head of the Eurovision betting is Swedish entry, Loreen, with her song Euphoria.

Russia, meanwhile, will be sending the formidable Buranovo Grannies, a group of ladies with a combined age of more than 400, and they're hotly tipped for Eurovision success, along with Italian entrant Nina Zilli. Ireland will no doubt be hoping to regain the title by giving Jedward and their high-maintenance quiffs a second shot at glory.

As ever the question remains, will it be nul points for the United Kingdom?

The two semi-finals will be held on 22 May and 24 May 2012, and the final on 26 May 2012.
