You may have heard that shelter pets come in all shapes and sizes, and it's true! You can find puppies, kittens, senior pets, and even special needs animals at your local humane society. Your perfect match might need some extra meals to bulk up after time on the streets, or you may meet an animal like Dr. Kitty who could stand to drop a few pounds.

No offense, Dr. Kitty! You are 'purrfect' just the way you are, but it's much better for any cat's health to be toward the lower end of the scale. That's why he's looking for a forever home that can help him reach his weight loss goals.

On March 14, the Humane Society of Pikes Peak in Colorado shared a sweet video of the 10-year-old shelter sweetheart. Viewers love this rotund cat and his easygoing demeanor, but everyone is waiting with bated breath for the day he finds him forever home.

OMG--look at him! It took a few video clips for me to truly see his chunky size, but once I processed what I was seeing, I was stunned. The animal shelter really wasn't exaggerating when they said he's a big cat. He weighs more than many small dogs!

While 27 pounds may be considered normal for extra large cat breeds--such as a male Maine Coon cat--that's way too heavy for your average housecat. Most domestic breeds, like the American Shorthair, should only weigh around 10 to 15 pounds, depending on their gender.

Thankfully, the shelter has already started implementing a weight loss regimen for Dr. Kitty. He's been in their care for less than a week, but every day counts when it comes to turning around a pet's health. With a dedicated forever person by his side, no one doubts that this shelter cat has a long, happy life ahead of him.

The Infamous 'Chonk Chart'

When it comes to feline weight loss, it can be difficult to pinpoint where a cat needs to be under all that fluff. Luckily, veterinarians have created a visual chart to help pet parents compare what's healthy and unhealthy. Simply look at your cat and see where they land on the chart!

This 'chonk chart' is extremely helpful and easy to understand, but when it comes to the Internet's obsession with fat cats, it's entertaining too. A version of this chart went viral online for its funny descriptions of each weight level, though in reality, obesity is serious for people and for pets. Fortunately, a visit to their cat's veterinarian can help any owner learn what steps to take to help them lose weight. Good luck, Dr. Kitty!
