A video online is showing the horrifying results of abandoning your pet at a shelter. Two cats were heartbroken after being turned over to PuppyKittyNYCity shelter in New York City. So much so, that the shelter managed to capture them crying after being separated from their owners.

The truth of what happens to animals that are surrendered is enough to make you cry.

One of the employees at the shelter shared video of the two cats, Croissant and Danish, crying after they were dropped off.

"This is what it sounds like when you return your cat to the shelter," she said from behind the camera.

The caption explained that the cats were originally adopted from the rescue and then returned when they were older after their owners got divorced. "You can literally hear the terror and heartbreak in their poor little voices," the woman continued.

The cats were practically wailing. They were so afraid.

"You're gonna be okay," she told them. "You're gonna be okay."

The comments section was heartbroken on their behalf. "Returned because of a divorce?! My husband and I would fight over who gets the cats and want to share custody. This is crazy," wrote one person. "I hope their previous owners have a terrible life. I mean that," another salty commenter added. "Over a divorce? Some people really don’t deserve them. I hope they truly find they fur-ever home," a third commenter agreed. "It’s unacceptable. Please keep them together," one person begged.

Animals Available for Adoption at PuppyKittyNYCity

If you want to help an animal in need, applying to adopt (or even foster) a pet is a good way to lend a hand. At PuppyKittyNYCity there are so many animals who need a home. Here are just a few who are available for adoption at the facility.

Calista 2 is a Domestic Shorthair who likes to watch birds through windows. The adult kitty is sweet and shy. Her favorite play thing is a track ball toy. Calista 2 would do best in a quiet home and likes gentle belly rubs and pets.

Macho is an adult Chihuahua looking for a forever home. Macho is very independent and playful. He loves long walks around the neighborhood, is very social, and is a ton of fun. Macho doesn't love being pet or held, but will show affection to the people he feels the most comfortable with.

Papa Elf is an American Pit Bull Terrier who is a lovebug. The rescue describes Papa Elf as being "happy go lucky." He has a ton of energy and is very loving.

Here's hoping that Croissant and Danish get scooped up by a loving human quickly. These two deserve a happy, forever home.
