Cat's Big Adventure with Dad Winds Up with Rescue From Boulder Flatirons

CC FOX31 Denver

Have you ever dreamed of picking up with your pet and hitting the open road? That's what Austin Wolff of Boulder, Colorado had been doing with his cat Link, until things took a scary turn during a recent rock climbing trip.

Wolff recently recounted the entire experience, which seemed downright scary.

Speaking with WHTM, Wolff explained that he adopted the rescue two years ago and hoped that she would be an "adventure cat." You know, the kind of animal he could bring on hikes and mountain climbs. Sounds pretty cool, right?

The plan was going along swimmingly until March 28, when one moment of bad judgement put the two of them in a precarious position.

Wolff explained that he'd decided to bring Link with him and a friend as they climb the Flatirons in Colorado. The Flatirons are slanted, reddish-brown sandstone formations at the foothills of the Boulder mountains. The first and third Flatirons are some of the most popular climbing destinations in the area, Colorado.com states. But a small decision really changed the experience Wolff and company had that day.

Wolff and his climbing partner decided to get started on their climb at 3:30 on the afternoon, believing they had enough daylight left in the day to complete it. But sadly that wasn't the case. WHTM reports that it was soon pitch black outside and because he was with a less-experienced climber, he was afraid to continue without a headlight. They decided to call for help.

"It took a little bit of a hit on my pride to have to call someone. However, it definitely was the right call,” Wolff told the news outlet. “There was no point in staying up there and risking our safety, my cat’s safety. It was just smarter to take one to the teeth and call someone.”

The two ultimately turned to the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group for help. The rescue group was surprised to find not just two humans in their party, but that there was a cat involved as well. Wolff admitted that he might've left out the fact that there was a cat with them when he made the call.

Thankfully Wolff and his group were able to be rescued. Rocky Mountain gave them headlamps and managed to lower them all to safety.

Some might worry about Link's safety during the incident, but Wolff assured the news outlet that his cat was pretty much napping through the whole thing. Cats! Nothing ever phases them does it?

The cat dad confirmed that the two have done many climbs together before, including in eight national parks. He said they hope to eventually hit all 63 and will head to Utah and Arizona. Here's hoping next time they'll start bright and early.
