Delays as car bursts into flames on motorway south of London

There were long tailbacks during rush hour on the M3 southwest of London after a car burst into flames on the road.

Fire crews were called out to the southbound carriageway, near the junction with the M25, where a passenger in a passing vehicle filmed as flames engulfed the stationary car.

Traffic was held behind the incident for more than an hour to allow three fire crews to fight the blaze, which led to long tailbacks on the M3 and onto the M25 in both directions.

A spokesman for Chertsey fire station told Get Surrey that the call came in at around 7.30am, and they attended along with two crews from Camberley.

He said two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and using two hose reels dealt with the fire. The Chertsey crew returned to the station at around 9.30am.

No injuries have been reported.

At the time Surrey Police tweeted: "Please be aware that we are dealing with a car fire between junction 2&3 and the southbound carriageway is completely closed, and will be for the next few hours. The Northbound carriageway is open, but expect delays."
