Britain’s favourite motorways revealed

The M6 in rural Cumbria and a section of the M1 in Leicestershire have been touted as the favourite sections of Britain’s motorway system, according to an online poll by Highways England.

Motorists appear to favour picturesque scenery to break up the monotony of long motorway journeys, as other favourites also cut through rolling countryside, such as the M5 in the south-west and A1 in Northumberland.

The results were released ahead of the late May Bank Holiday weekend, when Highways England aims to have removed the vast majority of its roadworks to ease congestion.

The government organisation responsible for motorways and major A-roads says that 97 per cent of its network should be roadwork-free between 6am Friday 24 May and 12.01am Tuesday 28 May.

Highways England’s customer service director Melanie Clarke said: “Many people have a favourite road they love driving on – and we want everyone to reach their destinations safely.

“We’re doing everything we can to make journeys as smooth as possible for those travelling and that’s why we’re keeping around 97 per cent of the road network we manage free from roadworks.”

The organisation says that almost half of all breakdowns are caused by simple mechanical problems, and has urged drivers heading out over the weekend to complete any routine maintenance to avoid any unnecessary headaches on the road.
