Good Samaritans block driver from leaving scene of crash

Footage captured after a car crash in Miami shows the amazing moment passers-by rallied to prevent a driver from leaving the scene. The video, filmed by a bystander on a mobile phone, shows a silver Infiniti SUV attempting to escape, as pedestrians shouted and banged on its windows.

The Infiniti was very heavily damaged, with its bumper and grille hanging off the front and scraping on the ground. According to a police report, it had crossed over into the path of oncoming traffic and struck another car on Biscayne Boulevard, Miami.

The video shows the aftermath, as the driver, 25-year-old Maxwell Oleg Lagutenko attempted to escape the scene. But nearby drivers weren't about to let him leave without a fight, and several other vehicles moved in an attempt to prevent him driving off.

Lagutenko had locked the vehicle's doors, but that didn't deter the crowd. One driver even leapt from his van armed with a hammer and began smashing the car's windows.

Despite the crowd's best efforts, Lagutenko did eventually escape the scene, whereupon he was pursued by a police officer. When authorities caught up with him, he appeared to be 'high on narcotics' and was booked into jail.

Lagutenko awaits trial, and records show he may have to answer for further offences. He's racked up 29 tickets in the last decade, and now faces charges of eluding police, leaving the scene of an accident and reckless driving.
