Dramatic dash cam footage has emerged that shows a driver deliberately swerving and knocking a cyclist to the ground following an altercation in Colchester.

Footage of the incident, which happened at around midday on Friday, May 13, 2016, has been released after the driver, Ashley Wallace Merrett, 30, of Mumford Close, West Bergholt, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, actual bodily harm and common assault in court earlier this week.

The court heard how the victim, a man in his 30s, was cycling in North Station Road accompanied by a friend when a Ford Mondeo slammed on its brakes in close proximity to the pair, at which point the victim gestured at the driver.

Footage captured by a HGV driver following showed how Wallace Merrett then swerved into the victim, knocking him off his bike, before driving away from the scene.

The victim was taken to hospital for treatment but was not seriously injured.

Essex Police said that the driver was arrested later that day and that he was charged in June. He is due to be sentenced in February.
