Average price of used cars falls amid "negative rhetoric" about diesel

The average price of a used car has fallen for the first time in eight months, fuelled by the "negative rhetoric" surrounding diesel, a new report shows.

Auto Trader said the average price fell by £50 last month to £12,589, although it was still 6% higher than the same time last year.

The decline was bigger for diesel cars, down by £143 between October and November according to an analysis of half a million used car listings and information from dealers.

The number of searches for diesel cars has steadily fallen over the past year following the Government announcement of a ban on new diesel and petrol cars by 2040, said the report.

Karolina Edwards-Smajda, Auto Trader's retailer and consumer product director, said: "The negative rhetoric surrounding diesel, which has been fuelled by the Government's recent announcements, is undoubtedly contributing to the decline in new and used car sales and has impacted used car prices in November."
