Four lorry drivers have been photographed on one of England's busiest motorways while eating, reading and using a phone at the wheel.

The drivers were snapped on the M20 near Ashford in Kent. Two HGV drivers were caught using their phone, one was holding cutlery and eating, while another appears to be driving using his elbows.

The images were taken by Surrey Police who have been using an unmarked HGV to catch motorists driving dangerously at the wheel. Other forces have also joined Surrey Police by using unmarked vehicles to take pictures.

Other truckers have been photographed driving dangerously on the M4 in Swindon and on the M1 near junction 46 in Yorkshire.

PC Dan Pascoe told the BBC that the force's unmarked lorry had been "invaluable", as 26 people were caught on just one day by Surrey Police.

Jason Wakeford from road safety charity Brake said: 'These are shocking images showing drivers with a total disregard for the safety of other road users."

Edmund King, president of the AA, also said some drivers often get bored while driving, particularly on motorways.

"I think some feel that because they are high up in the cab it is harder to spot them."

He also added to the BBC that the consequences of being distracted for just a couple of seconds could be "absolutely dire".
