Road rage biker banned from driving after causing crash

A motorcyclist has been banned from driving after he caused a serious car crash during a bout of road rage.

Terry Hammond, 43, of Boscawen Gardens in Braintree, Essex, admitted dangerous driving after having a head-on collision with a Mercedes van while riding his Yamaha bike in Church Road, Witham, which was caught on his helmet camera.

During the crash, Hammond suffered life-changing injuries and had to be flown from the scene to Addenbrooke's hospital in Cambridge.

The footage shows him being cut up by a van driver as he is about to pass a parked vehicle. Enraged by this, he pulls alongside the van driver, shouting at him while approaching a bend. As both the van and biker round the bend the other van appears, leading to the head-on smash.

Hammond originally pleaded not guilty at Colchester Magistrates' Court, but later changed his plea at Chelmsford Crown Court to guilty.

He was handed a 12-month driving ban, with an extended retest at the end of it, a three-month community order with a three-month residence condition, and told to pay £50 costs.
