Hyundai’s highly anticipated i30 N is unveiled
This is the all-new Hyundai i30 N, the first ever hot hatch the South Korean manufacturer has made, and it looks fantastic.
Revealed to the press in dusseldorf, the new Ford Focus ST rival has a choice of either a 247bhp or 271bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine.
The more powerful model comes with a performance package and can crack 0-60mph in 5.9 seconds with a top speed of 155mph.
Both versions come with 353Nm of torque and use a six-speed manual gearbox, which appeals to the more enthusiastic driver rather than an automatic flappy paddle unit.
Hyundai has also replaced the push-button handbrake that you find in the standard hatch and Tourer for a normal manually operated one.
On the outside, Hyundai has taken a standard five-door i30 hatchback and made it super sporty. This is thanks to sharper, more angled styling all over the car, the addition of a chunkier chin spoiler and a rear one too.
The car also comes with a choice of 18 or 19-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, a sporty steering wheel, sports seats with Alcantara and leather, and the 'N' logo stamped all over the cabin just to remind you you're in something a bit special.
There are active exhaust pipes that create a very loud pop when the engine is revved hard. This is controlled by an active valve system that operates depending on which of the five driving modes is selected. These include: Eco, Normal, Sport, N and N Custom settings.
Albert Biermann,, executive vice president of performance development and high performance vehicle division, said: "The Hyundai i30 N has been developed for no other purpose than to deliver maximum driving fun to our customers in an accessible high-performance package."
Prices have not yet been announced, however, Hyundai Motor UK boss Tony Whitehorn told us the range will be competing against the Ford Focus ST rather than the Volkswagen Golf GTI as it is more of a 'purist's' car. Therefore, the i30 N could start from £25,000, almost matching the Focus ST but undercutting the Golf GTI by £845.
