Rally driver saved by guardrail following dramatic wipeout

This is the terrifying moment a single metal guard rail stopped a rally driver from rolling down a steep cliff following a brake failure.

Helicopter footage from last weekend's Rally Islas Canarias – part of the European Rally Championship – shows driver Tomasz Kasperczyk slam into the narrow guard rail while making a sharp right turn.

Incredibly, the barrier doesn't give way, and leaves Kasperczyk and his co-driver Damian Syty teetering over the edge of the sheer drop.

Following the crash, Syty scrambles out of the wrecked Ford Fiesta RS rally car, and can be seen holding an 'OK' sign up to the cameras before running off up the road.

Kasperczyk can be seen emerging from the racer shortly afterwards and signalling that he was uninjured.

The Polish driver wasn't the only person to have a crash at the event, with Skoda racer Jan Černý also colliding with a barrier and rolling down a hill. Luckily, both he and his co-driver were able to walk away from the crash.
