Jaguar has confirmed a new four-cylinder version of its popular F-Type sports car, with prices starting from £49,900.
The new entry-level car is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 296bhp and 400Nm torque, allowing for a 0-60mph sprint time of 5.4 seconds and a 155mph top speed.
These performance figures mean the new model boasts the same 0-60mph time as the V6 F-Type, while its top speed only trails by 7mph.
According to Jaguar, the four-pot F-Type offers buyers a combined fuel economy figure of 39.2mpg – which is a 16 per cent improvement over the V6 model.
As with the other F-Type variants, the new base model will be offered as both a convertible and a hard-top. However, while the more powerful cars are available with a manual transmission, the four-cylinder will only receive an eight-speed automatic gearbox that has been engineered specifically for use with the new power plant.
One of the F-Type's key characteristics is its raucous engine note. To ensure the new baby model is just as pleasing on the ears as its V6 and V8 siblings, Jaguar is offering it with a standard-fit active exhaust, while R-Dynamic models are also available with a switchable active exhaust.
Customer deliveries are expected to begin from mid to late summer.
