A British expat is facing a manslaughter charge after crushing his wife to death near their home in south-west France.

According to the Daily Mail, 62-year-old David Turtle claims he accidentally ran over his wife, Stephanie, 50, in Prayssac, north of Toulouse.

Mrs Turtle had been crushed an asphyxiated when local police found her body under the family Mercedes-Benz E-Class Estate at 2am on Thursday.

The couple moved to the area last summer, and were working on turning their house into a B&B.

"They were celebrating and very happy," a source in Prayssac told the Daily Mail. "David and Stephanie had not stopped working since they arrived in July. They were delighted with the renovation work, and the house looked wonderful."

The newspaper says Turtle had just registered the guesthouse as a business with local authorities and had filed for a permit to build a swimming pool. The couple had also started a blog, in which Mrs Turtle detailed their big move to France.

The newspaper also quoted another source, who said: "Mr Turtle faces a charge of violence leading to the unintentional death of his wife. He is likely to be remanded in custody. Police are not seeking anyone else in connection with the tragedy."

"David is cooperating fully with the authorities, but they are keeping him in custody. He insists that it was an accident."
