Drivers held up as elk cross the highway

Updated:

Amazing footage has surfaced from Washington state as a herd of elk cross the road.

It might sound like the beginning of a bad joke, but the deer can be seen flooding across the road in their droves, forcing the motorist filming the video to come to a stop.

It is not known why the herd felt the need to cross the highway, although it could be part of the spring migration that sees the animals flock to higher ground as the temperatures climb and the weather improves.

However, it could be that the elk simply wanted to cross the tarmac to move to a better grazing area.

Elk are known for being highly damaging to cars if involved in an accident, and Saab famously devised the 'elk test' to show how well its vehicles would stand up to impact with one of the huge deer.
