Hippo charges car in South Africa

This is the nerve-racking moment a hippo charges at a car full of people in South Africa.

The film, which was shot in Vaalwater last month, shows the female hippo sauntering along a road towards the vehicle, before breaking into a full-speed run.

Panicked cries can be heard from those on board the car, as they shout at the driver to pull away quickly.

Thankfully, no one in the vehicle was hurt during the encounter, although the passengers' nervous laughter suggests they know just how close they came to a serious accident.

The hippo had allegedly just been shot with a tranquilliser dart fired by a vet.

Despite their gigantic size, hippos are seriously quick animals and can reach speeds close to 20mph on dry land – no mean feat, considering they can weigh as much as 1,500kg.

According to the person who filmed the encounter, the hippo was safely relocated to a nature reserve.
