Volkswagen's updated electric Golf comes with more power and range

Updated:

The Volkswagen e-Golf has been updated with more power, more range and an updated interior.

Consumers' biggest concern when it comes to electric cars is range, so VW has tackled this head on. The e-Golf now comes with a range of approximately 124 miles, which is 50 per cent more than before.

That's considerably lower than a petrol or diesel car could manage. However, Volkswagen is keen to say that this car is designed for use by commuters who travel relatively short distances in big cities, or in places where there is heavy congestion.

Recharging has become less of an issue, too, thanks to a new lithium-ion battery. It has a larger capacity than in the previous generation e-Golf and can be charged to 80 per cent within an hour via a 40kW station.

The electric motor's power output has also increased, now measuring 100kW, up from 85kW. That means it can complete the 0-60mph sprint one second faster at 9.4 seconds, while top speed also increases to 93mph.

The rest of the Golf range has recently been refreshed and the e-Golf receives the same interior upgrades. VW's new gesture control infotainment system is therefore included, which allows drivers to navigate menus by waving their hands in specific ways.

Volkswagen is investing heavily in electric car technology following its emissions-cheating scandal, and is targeting 30 EVs in its model line-up by 2020.
