Formula 1 star forced to flee burning race car

Updated:

Formula 1 racer Kevin Magnussen was forced to jump from his car after a fire took hold in the pit lane.

The incident happened during Free Practice 1 in Malaysia ahead of this weekend's Grand Prix. The Dane had just completed his first lap and was being wheeled back into his garage when flames erupted from the Renault's engine.

His engineers quickly helped the 23-year-old to jump out of the car as emergency crews doused it with foam.

Renault believes a fuel leak caused the fire, which took 10 minutes to bring under control as fuel continued to pour from the car.

Renault technical director Nick Chester said: "It looks like the tank pressurised, but we will investigate. We were running the tank full and we were running some experimental parts in preparation for Mexico."

Nico Rosberg currently heads the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with an eight-point lead over team-mate Lewis Hamilton.
